Work life

I am a software and web developer.

Working within both the public and private sectors I have acquired a broad range of skills, and a love of developing and supporting systems for clients and colleagues.

UK Sports Institute (2023)

EIS is now UKSI, with a slight change to my job title to Lead Developer. I am still heading up the in-house development team, liaising with external partners and leading on the technical development with the organisation’s Performance Data team.

English Institute of Sport (2019)

A new year, a new opportunity has begun. I have just started my new role as a Senior .NET Developer at the English Institute of Sport.

In an exciting time to join this national organisation in the run-up to Tokyo 2020, I shall be part of a great team to support, maintain and develop key services for athletes, coaches and practitioners.

Geoff Smith Associates (2015 – 2018)

At Geoff Smith Associates (GSA), in my role as a full stack software and web developer, I used a broad range of platforms and technologies.

Moving to the private sector after so long in the public sector wasn’t an easy decision, but I feel this was an opportunity to cement my technical knowledge in a new environment.

During my time here I learnt so much of what is a vast and complex suite of products, working on updating core solutions to cutting edge technologies and utilising my experience in user experience and interface design.

Loughborough College (2002-2015)

Previous to this I worked as the Senior Web Developer at Loughborough College, where I provided support, training and development of online systems for the organisation.

I began my working life at the College, working my way up from a part-time IT Technician straight out of University, moving roles into the web team eventually promoted to senior developer in the College. I am very proud of where I started and how I grew to be an influential member of the organisation, developing internal and external platforms into sophisticated and essential parts of their future strategy.

I have experienced many people, even during interviews, who vocally look down on the public sector as “easy”, “backwards” and “not living in the real world”. I for one believe that although there may be unique challenges to overcome, in terms of education there isn’t a more diverse and challenging environment to work in where there is a real opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives.

Media Information Ltd (1999-2000)

My first development role was a 12 month placement as part of my university degree.

Providing hardware and software support working alongside the IT Support Manager, I also worked with the development teams to produce online applications and intranet sites.

This placement gave me a solid grounding and experience to move into full time roles as I left education.
